Abstract
The article examines the correlation between school anxiety and cognitive characteristics of attention of fifth-graders undergoing the period of adaptation to a new education environment. The data obtained with the help of psychodiagnostic techniques have revealed that a high level of school anxiety negatively influences selective attention and concentration. The results have shown that more than a half of the students have a low anxiety level, while a third had a high level though, which requires extra psychological and educational follow-up for students. The study has also revealed gender differences: girls showed higher results in selective attention and concentration compared to boys. The study results emphasize the necessity to take into account anxiety and its influence on cognitive processes in educational practice.
